The Layers Within: A Lesson in Laos
I love it when this happens…
A few years ago, I was in Luang Prabang, Laos, working on the manual for our Yoga Teacher Training. I was deep into writing about the Koshas, the five layers of our existence, and how they are all interconnected, much like those wooden Russian nesting dolls.
Just as you open a nesting doll to find a smaller, more delicate one inside, the Koshas represent a journey from the “gross” outer physical shell inward to the most subtle, spiritual core of our being. In Yoga philosophy, the “Self” is said to be covered by these five sheaths. As we develop more awareness of each layer, we move beyond the surface.
I love exploring these concepts, practicing them, and sharing them with others because there is so much to Yoga beyond the asanas, or postures. We often begin this journey by becoming more aware of our physical body, our breath, and our thoughts. Over time, we start to experience the more subtle layers – the parts of us that exist beyond the body and the mind. Why do we do this? To enjoy more balance, joy, and tranquility in our everyday lives.
Anyway, back to Laos! David and I finally took a break from the curriculum to grab some lunch. We sat down, looked at the wall behind us, and what did we see? Russian nesting dolls. I love it when that happens! It was a gentle reminder that Yoga philosophy is all around us, all the time, if we are just mindful enough to see it.
